The archeological guide will meet you at the hotel.
The tour will begin at the Church of San
Clemente. This structure is composed of three levels,
one built on top of another. Your guide will
explain the many ancient mythologies of the time, as
well as the common beliefs during the
Medieval Period.
From here, your experienced guide will escort you toward
the gladiators' barracks. You will
learn many things about this most recognized monument
in the world, the Coliseum.
The chronology of the glory that was once Rome will
be discussed as you climb to the upper
piers. The view into the interior is a fascinating maze
of tunnels. This is truly an immense and
imposing amphitheater. Its remains continue to be admired
for their ancient splendor. It was
commonly considered to be a stadium for professional
gladiators to fight to the death. You will
discover that this was intended to cultivate the warlike
spirit that had enabled the Romans to
conquer the known world.
We will continue the tour to the Arch of Titus, and
on to the path that the victorious
Roman Legions took. We will descend into the Roman Forum,
up the Via Sacra and into the commercial,
religious and political center of Ancient Rome. During
the Republican Era, this was also the
center of civic and economic activity. It continued
to maintain its important role during the
Imperial Period as the route of triumphal
processions for victorious generals.
Our exploration is completed at the very top of Capitol
Hill where all can gaze below at the
ruins of a once great empire. We'll continue on to the
Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by the
brilliant master, Michelangelo, in order to house the
political powers of Renaissance Rome.
