The car will pick you up at your hotel
in the areas of Rome, Naples and the Amalfi Coast. You
will then be driven to Caserta's Royal
Palace. It is the most glorious monument in the town,
and is a unique and powerful piece of architecture.
It was built from 1752 to 1754 by Luigi Vanvitelli for
Charles of Bourbon. The palace is
surrounded by a splendid park with fountains and waterfalls.
The imposing complex consists of a
square shaped building, whose dimensions measure approximately
250 by 250 meters. Its interior is
divided into four sections, each having two wings. Each
section was constructed with perpendicular
sides, and as such, surrounds four courtyards. Located
at the far end of the palace's facade, you
will discover an impressive and scenic park.
It extends for three kilometers until reaching a chain
of hills. Here, you will also find a
very fine English garden, with a lush and varied collection
of plant life. We'll then drive straight
to Cassino, about 90 km south of Rome. On the mountain
top, and overlooking the city,
stands the Abbey of Montecassino. The mighty structure
symbolizes the endurance and resilience
of the Christian faithful.
This Abbey is of special artistic importance. It was
founded by St. Benedict in about 529 AD,
and was destroy and rebuilt on four separate occasions.
The most recent was in 1944 near the end of
World War II. Through the ages, the Abbey was looked
upon as a place of holiness, culture and art
for which it became world renown.
